Split & Recombs - Crushing legacy mods?

Hi everyone,

I had a discusion with a guild mate about this.
Just lost a high value legacy mod base to a split fossile.
He told me that it should work, but instead the outcome were two splits without the legacy mod.
I wanted to use them to up my chance to hit a recomb.
He told me also that the recombs have eaten all of his legacy mod bases after the last patch.

So do you guys know anything about this?
Is it still possible to recomb legacy mods?

In regards of split fossiles I learned the lesson the hard way.
