i suppose up to about 100k maybe. I had several dozens thousands gold on me and it wouldnt let me ransom. I wouldnt have done it anyway, nobody should for that amount of gold, but could not even check not it with that sum of about 60k.

i saved 350k and still would not open the "ransom" button...

It's a flat 50k, but if you try to rescue and fail, you will not get another option to ransom. You can only abandon.
