Searching an area for items / monsters

Inspired by screenshot of The Ship Graveyard:

Ships usualy carry some usefull / valuable items. Crew members usualy have some too. If ship ends like those shown on a screenshot, some of those items should be laying around. For other than Ship Graveyard areas, there would be items lost in the battle or some other activity.

There are times when it would be perfect if character can be commanded to search an area for items, like cigarette or toilet break. Click anywhere on screen, command character to search radius X area and go AFK. Radius value would affect search time. There could even be a setting for how deep character should dig for items, affecting search time too.

Also, there could be monsters living underground exclussively ):o=

That sounds like a big time waster to me. It's an action rpg. You don't want to set some options and walk away and hope you come back to something. What if I stumble onto a ship but don't want to take a break? Do I have to sit there and let my character explore while I twiddle my thumbs?

Better to simply make it a "treasure chest" object that you click and open. Much like armor racks, bookshelves, etc from the Diablo series. That way you click, see stuff drop, and move on.
It would be optional activity.

i can remember vaguely a game i played which had a search button which did that, but for the life of me can't remember what it was.
