AOE crit

Hi everyone,
I was thinking about how critical strike works with AOE. If you were to use an AOE attack, say ice nova, and you happen to crit, would that count as one critical strike or would it count as one for every monster you critically struck? Feedback would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Doesn't each monster hit by the AoE have a separate chance to take critical damage from the AoE? It wouldn't make sense to me for you to cast an AoE spell and have the spell, as a whole, 'crit' and do crit damage to all monsters hit by it.

I guess I could see an argument for the spell being an all or non crit scenario though, as it is your critical hit chance that determines if each spell you cast crits. I've always thought of crits as something that is checked per target though, as in many systems monster stats can reduce your chance to crit them.

the chance of determining if the hit will crit or not is rolled on the attack, not on the monster hit, so a AOE will crit all monsters hit by it, fi it crits, but it still counts as 1 crit, so if your talking about surgoen flasks you will only get 1 charge out of each crit despite how much monsters you manage to hit with a single crit attack.

i know that many other ARPG games roll crits individually per monster hit instead of rolling on the attack as a whole, but this is how PoE works.

It is all or nothing. That is how I like it! Nothing better than when I critical on my split shot and everything on the screen explodes.

Given that I'm in the process of building an AoE witch with a focus on cast speed and crit chance, I have to say I like how that works too. :-P
