Skeleton pet hit boxes are a gameplay problem.

I just recently got to the last difficulty and found I had to modify my strategy to deal with ranged enemies killing me very quickly. The solution I came up with is to use a bunch of summoned skeletons to create a wall between the monster I'm whacking on and the enemies behind him.

The problem I'm having though with this is that once I summon a pack of skeletons (10 atm) it is quite difficult to highlight any enemy near those seletons. If the enemy is standing still, and I am standing still it is hard, and if I or they are moving it's virtually impossible.

My first character was a summoning witch that I played up to level 30, and this new character does dual wield swords now with skeletons as a shield/distraction, and so far I've not found any reason that I would ever want to highlight my pet other than to see their current health. Is there some reason that the highlight algorithm so aggressively targets these pets instead of the enemies? Would be wonderful to see some changes in this regard.

I agree. With many minions it's hard to target enemies or even see them in the slaughter.
It would be nice to have a better visibility of enemies.

Attacking is not so much a problem since you can just hold shift when attacking.
I strongly agree.

Having a dozen minions around me as a summoner makes it almost impossible to target individual enemies, since I'll always get my own instead of the enemy.

It being a bit hard do distinguish between my summons and enemy skeletons is slightly annoying, but I can live with it. But having half the time my minions as a target instead of the enemy rare mob will drive me nuts eventually.

This leads to me killing enemy rare mobs without even knowing what their abilities would have been, since I can't target them consistently anyway so I'll just firestorm everything to death. :(

Same here, I agree !
You should have an option in UI panel to disable this.

Agreed. Specially if you have a melee character using minions. I tried to use some skeletons with my dual claw witch. Ditch it right away. Impossible to target the mobs properly.
Yeah it's been brought up by a few people many times ( me included ). I'm assuming it's gonna be fixed at some point simply because a lot of people have mentioned it. That's the good news I guess. I just hope there is some art change to make the summoned skeletons look a bit different from enemy skeletons.

If you're crying that playing with minions is hard , try without them to check out what it will be like . I played summoner here got to 75 lvl before the new patch and what i can tell you is this - Summoners are afk farming chars , it's just sad that people can't even play such an easy build .
I agree with original message !
And the same with other players: allies shouldn't be target-able.

UGH! That's not the subject of the conversation! It's not about difficulty, it's about an annoying interface issue.
