Stats on a Staff to be considered good?

What stats am I suppose to be looking for on a Staff? Cause I always NPC them whenever I get one. Am I suppose to look for high phys mods like 2H maces? or ele mods etc?

What stats do people usually look for on staves?

depends on what you are going to use.
i have a shadow wielding a staff and i look for phi dmg+atk speed and some ele dmg.
Since staff passives are terrible the only staff I would consider using would have to have "everything dies on hit" effect.
Staff passives arnt terrible, they jsut have hte largest amount of mod possibilities of any weapon making "crafting" a decent one SIGNIFICANTLY harder and not practical in any way.

Example:

White Bow has 11 poss Prefix = 165 combos of 3

Life Leech From Physical Dmg %
(*)Local Min Added Cold Dmg / Local Max Added Cold Dmg
(*)Local Min Added Fire Dmg / Local Max Added Fire Dmg
(*)Local Min Added Lightning Dmg / Local Max Added Lightning Dmg
(*)Local Min Added Physical Dmg / Local Max Added Physical Dmg
(**)Local Physical Dmg +%
(**)Local Physical Dmg +% / Local Accuracy Rating
Local Socketed Bow Gem Level +
Local Socketed Gem Level +
Mana Leech From Physical Dmg %
Weapon Elemental Dmg +%

Ideal bow will Have all mods from what I starred. Meaning over half the mods you may roll on Transmute and augment and other craft rolls are positive, and the ones that are not starred are usually still beneficiary or nuetral at best.

Now the bow has 17 possibilities = 680 3 slot combos

(M)Base Max Mana
(P)Life Leech From Physical Dmg %
(*)Local Min Added Cold Dmg / Local Max Added Cold Dmg
(*)Local Min Added Fire Dmg / Local Max Added Fire Dmg
(*)Local Min Added Lightning Dmg / Local Max Added Lightning Dmg
(P)Local Min Added Physical Dmg / Local Max Added Physical Dmg
(P**)Local Physical Dmg +%
(P**)Local Physical Dmg +% / Local Accuracy Rating
(E)Local Socketed Cold Gem Level +
(E)Local Socketed Fire Gem Level +
Local Socketed Gem Level +
(E)Local Socketed Lightning Gem Level +
(P)Local Socketed Melee Gem Level +
(M)Mana Leech From Physical Dmg %
(E)Spell Dmg +%
(E)Spell Dmg +% / Base Max Mana
(P)Weapon Elemental Dmg +%

NOw look how many of those can completely contradict each other may never be utilized by the class intending to improve his staff.

M-Mana - Worthless if user blood magic and to most users least pref if they are melee or using the weapon as main dps source

E-Ele based - These contradict the m-melee P physical Mods in most cases and would make a staff not worth continuing on with the craft process. Yea they can work sometimes but as you can see of if you wanted to match the * and ** mod which would you rather spend resources on assuming the result was worth the same price to a buyer? Well staffs are even less desirable, so the good ones are very rare.

These prefixes and pools basically define what and how to craft correcetly. Suffixes less so becuase there are more and the most important are prefixes for weapons. But the bows have 14 and the staffs 22 resulting in about 60000 poss bow 6 mod combos and a whooping 900,000 staff combos, that doesnt account for good vs bad rolls or the prevalence of certain mods (I dont know if there is one, but I am guess there is)

And prof they are not all terriable
I am sure when I exalt it and get 7 accuracy I will change my opinion

I have a staff similar to that with a little less dps using it on a melee staff build on a templar and it kicks ass. Got my inferno blow hitting over 4k dps and a sweep almost as lethal. Its proven to be a durable build using staff passives that give to block and building him like a tank. Its a fun build that allows me to jump in the middle of a big group spamming sweep and infernal blow and survive( on most monster packs :P) as long as I don't desync. currently level 66 running maps successfully with some of the easier mods.

I generally look for phys damage and attack speed primarily and then whatever else your build could benefit from.

What stats do people usually look for on staves?

Staves are used by wildly different builds for wildly different things. To simplify things as much as possible: you can split 'good staves' into two groups, caster staves and weapon staves.

Caster staves are the most 'natural' choice of a 2H weapon for most casters. Look for the same stats that make a good caster wand. +Gem level, mana regen, spell damage, fire/cold/lightning damage, spell crit... The usual.

Weapon staves are used by a lot of the same builds as 2H Maces. I'm not sure what is preferred between ele and phys damage usually, but damage and attack speed are what you're looking for.

Good staves are really rare, though, and they don't seem to be a super popular weapon type. I only stash the ones that are truly exceptional.
Just found these 2 today; I guess the 374 one is worth keeping? :S
