Vortex + Cast Speed???
Does this make the DoT tick faster, by any chance?
Also, is it just me, or is Cold Snap extremely similar??? Am I missing a big difference??? Last bumped on Aug 7, 2019, 10:12:36 AM

" It does not. Less Duration Support does. |

Oh wow, interesting. So... does that also mean Increased Duration just makes it take longer to do the same damage?
Like it's programmed to forcibly do whatever its "base duration" would do in damage, and we can control how long or short it spends getting to that point??? Pretty weird, to be honest, if that's how it works. |

" Incorrect, DOT duration is set by the spell/effect itself. This duration can be increased or decreased, impacting total amount of damage deal by single cast of such spell/effect but damage per second remains the same regardless how long the DO would tick for. DOT duration is often non-factor when calculating damage per second as you often can only have single source of such dot on your target. There are few exceptions to this rule provided by keystones or items. Also poisons are behaving differently and dot duration is actually sought after mod that increases your damage output against heavy targets. |

So why would he say Less Duration makes it tick faster?
Is it unique in that property? Or was he wrong? |

I have basic knowledge of DOT mechanic but for more detailed analysis I would have to rely on what is posted on PoE wiki. There is nothing mentioned about DOT ticks happening faster when using Less Duration Support. In general, when you scale duration it is total duration of a DOT rather than how often such dot ticks. There are very specific items or modifiers that can make DOTs tick faster.

there are no ticks. its constant degeneration over time. duration has no effect on dps.
there are some mods that make some DoTs deal damage faster (same total damage over shorter duration), but those have different wording. Dyadian Dawn belt for example IGN: Eric_Lindros

Less duration makes it do more damage because it has a "more damage" modifier to duration gems.

" " Yea, "Tick faster" may not be the correct expression. What I meant to say was indeed that Less Durations comes with a massive "more damage" multiplier. Last edited by tomay#5509 on Aug 7, 2019, 5:30:38 AM

" Less Duration has more damage multiplier but it is not very commonly used to scale damage of DOTs because it reduces the duration of those dots. There are support gems that are providing more damage than Less duration gem without the negative effect of dramatically reducing the duration of the DOT. This is important if you can not reliably re-apply the DOT on your target. I played a lot of Essence Drain & Contagion and I always prefer to increase duration of my DOTs because it allows me to fire once and move on. If you reduce duration of your dot, you must hang around to ensure you do enough damage to kill your target. |
