What should I craft on this Vaal Axe?

Just my 2 cents on this, without going into PoB doing simulations or having extensive knowlege on this.
Gem levels have significantly more importance for spells than attack skills. Also, levels are more important for skills than support gems. Good example for attack skills can be Cyclone, which gets extra stage at gem level 21 (6 stages at lvl20, 7 stages at lvl21), which means larger AOE. Similar situation is for Essence Drain where the damage increase from lvl20 to 21 is nearly 12% for its DOT component. Both examples are significant increases to skill performance. Now lets look at support gems: 1. Brutality provides 59% more physical damage at lvl20 while at lvl22 it provides 61% more damage. This is 3.4% increase. 2. Controlled Destruction provides 44% more spell damage at lvl20 and 46% more spell damage at lvl21, or 4.5% increase. There might be one exemption to this, which might be Empower. I have not tested this myself but in theory Empower is support gem, which means it would have its gem level increased by the craft by +2, which in turn would support skills that may benefit a lot from this. Again, this would benefit spells more than attack skills where Cyclone gets little bit more damage scalling and no additional stages while Essence Drain would see massive 25% damage increase on its dot (theoretical calculation with lvl21 ED, lvl4 Empower and +2 support gem levels). |

" Don't underestimate Double Damage. It's calculated after everything else and is a massive multiplier for DPS. My Heavy Strike Zerker can get to about 1,5 mil AVAERAGE Damage per Hit because of Double Damage. Especially on Crit Builds, this can become quiet juicy. |
