Path of Exile 1 Gameplay Help and Discussion - What is an Upgrade Path? - Forum

There are a few ways one specific unique can be upgraded to another specific unique. All of these are item-specific — there's no general way to upgrade uniques. A large number of uniques can be upgraded via prophecies. These all just require killing a specific boss while the prophecy is active and you have the unique in your inventory. Some uniques that only drop in the Temple of Atzoatl can be upgraded with Vials in a tier 3 sacrificial chamber within the temple. The uniques that only drop from breach enemies can be upgraded with blessings that drop from breachlords. A few uniques can only be made via vendor recipe. I think that's it off the top of my head.
