Avatar of Fire = DPS Nerf?
How the hell is Avatar of Fire good? It converts 50% of damage sources to fire, but you can't deal any other damage besides that. Doesn't this result in a 50% nerf to your DPS unless you find ways to fully convert your other damage sources to fire?
I don't understand ele conversion and why it's even good. Last bumped on Jul 13, 2018, 2:15:16 PM

Conversion can be good because you can scale base physical damage, and then scale it again as fire damage. Of course if you don't build around it correctly it won't be a net positive. Here's a conversion guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/79lf7k/engineeringeternity_path_of_exile_damage/

" that's how you use Avatar of Fire, yes (Quickie guide to Damage Conversion: Damage bonuses are allowed to apply to any damage type that a piece of damage ever was. This means that, even if you can't "double dip" on modifiers, what you can do if you have, for example, 100% physical to fire, is have both physical damage bonuses and fire damage bonuses apply to your damage.) As adghar says, "topping up" the conversion from other sources and then focusing purely on fire damage is indeed the most common use of Avatar of Fire.
However there is another possibility. Maybe your primary damage type is fire, but you also deal a bunch of non-fire damage from other sources. If you are only scaling your fire damage, having even half of this damage be scaled by it is sometimes better than keeping all of it unmodified. Simple artificial case: Your skill deals 500 fire and 200 physical base damage. You have 300% increased fire damage, but no physical damage increases. Without AoF, you would deal 2000 fire and 200 physical damage (2,200 total). With AoF, you convert 100 of the physical damage to fire, and end up dealing 2000 + 400 = 2,400 fire damage. This is still a damage boost, even though half of your base physical damage is lost. (Worth noting is that there are even some fringe cases where you specifically do not want to deal damage of multiple elements, and that modifier is actually a benefit: for example, some uses of Elemental Equilibrium.)
