Act 3 Catacombs needs some event or quest that justifies it's existence

Besides the Trial for the Lord's Labyrinth of course.

Maybe a boss fight in the main chamber after we cleared all the spiders, the necromancer and the living statues?

I'v been thinking about since the first iteration of the area back in 2013.

My best idea is after we clear all the small monsters, a giant Necromancer would rise out of the fog, accompanied by a giant, crowned, armored skeleton king, The King of Thaumaturgy, essentially a lich king.

The fight could be way better than the one in Diablo 3.

Would be cool. Just saying...

Well, it has the Trial already. The location that has literally nothing linked to it is The Dread Thicket.

Wouldn't hurt having something extra there though, especially that Act 3 has multiple looong and winding quests, so adding a simple "kill that bad dude" for instance would be a nice change of pace.
When game lacked content, the Catacombs existed as a high level farming spot, with a large chest at the end to spice it. Nowadays there's nothing left of it.
Same for Dread Thicket, but few farmed it - chaos damage inside kicked ass.

The latter was seriously reworked - with a mini-boss and a minor god inside, altogether with a mandatory quest. They turned it from a zone no one farmed, into a must.
Eventually, Catacombs may have the same treatment in future. At its current state this zone is worthless.

@torturo: When was this large chest thing going on?

I've been playing PoE since the closed beta and I don't remember any large chests being there at the end.

There were/is those 4 statues that come to life, the spiders that crawl out from the pit, the necromancer dude with a blue group of skellies, two coffins and a brown wooden chest.

Was this during the Vaal expansion? Because I missed some weeks in the middle there due to poor net connection.

Was it a big loot chest like the one in the Chambers of Atziri?

Anyway there is also that little bridge to a closed up doorway at the end. Maybe in some later expansion we can open it up and meet a minor God or defeat some other big boss.

it was before strongboxes made their way into the game. at the end of the big plateau in catacombs there is a small path which still leads to a niche corner.

every 10 to 15 instances there would be a opening there which lead to a small room containing the big treasure chest.

to be honest, i raided the catacombs so often at that time that even now i instinctially look for that room every time i do catacombs layout instances and sometimes even jump into the corner out of old habit :)

You have to be more specific than “closed beta” to say how long you've been playing. Most people think of it as the original closed beta like 2012/2013. Your join date is 2016 so I assume you are talking about the 3rd closed beta.

The chest in catacombs predates Ambush league which was in 2014.

LOL the first time I ever played this game, I cleared every single monster in the dread thicket thinking there would be some reward or quest involve. I was so utterly confused when I was running around looking for something or a notification, I ended up going on google and discovered the area is there just to be there.

And the suggestion in the article is to master farm in that zone. Yea right, like I would ever want to farm that tileset LOL.
Dunno what the point was removing the big chest from catacombs. It made the whole place special. Maybe it was deemed too powerful.

SamuPeter86 i don't think you were around when this chest was there. It was a long time ago before your join date. If i remember right it was kind of like a curious lockbox.

All of those big chests (forget what they were called, Majestic Chest or Grand Chest?) that were in a few areas like at the end of Catacombs were removed when strongboxes were added. GGG explicitly stated that they were no longer needed because strong boxes were being added.

edit: I think that there's still one of those big chests in the map boss area of the unique map (Acton's Nightmare?) where monsters all revive until the map boss is killed.
