STEAM "Unable to connect to login server" please help..!

I play via Steam and since the update it will not let me log in.

POE launches but...

"Unable to connect to login server".!!?!?!$£"$£%£"$^

No news feed available and all the gateways show "?" for ping.

I have downloaded the standalone client and that works: so I've created this account to get my fix but I need my actual Steam account back.

Anyone had this problem before and have any idea how to sort it out?
