Noob question about Critical Strike chance passive skills

Hello, I'm new to this game and aRPGs overall, so bear with me a little.

It's my third day playing PoE and so far I've been loving it and while the amount of information being thrown at my face was horrible the first hours I think I've got the hang of it. Just a tiny question...

The passive skills, in the Witch's territory, dedicated to Critical Strike with Spells is puzzling me. Why? Well, it says

+20% Critical Strike Chance for Spells
+25% Critical Strike Chance for Spells
+50% Critical Strike Chance for Spells

Also, Support gems of Critical Strike say they increase Critical Strike for that spell for a large amount (Usually something above 60+%)

Yet, when I check the my spell's stats on the character tab, I have much lower critical strike chance than promised by all these things. They also don't Crit as much as they should if they have so much critical strike chance stacked into the passives. Right now my Sparks, which is the spell I have linked to a Critical Strike chance support gem is barely reaching 20% Crit. and the skills not linked to Crit gems are on 10% Crit

Based on what those skills says I should have the 95% cap for every spell (?) So I don't understand :c

Those modifiers are modifying the base crit chance of the spell. So if the spell you are using has a base 6.00% chance to crit, +20% chance is +20% of that 6%. Which will add 1.2% to your chance to crit you see in the character screen.

Oh... Now it all makes sense. So the amount of Crit required to reach at least 50% Crit must be very high.

Thanks for the answer!

It's high but there are a few options to increase the base crit chance. The Increased Critical Strikes support gem does that. Which makes each bonus to crit chance give more overall crit chance. It's also why crit attack builds try to get as high of a base crit chance on their weapon as they can.

Not really considered too difficult anymore, particularly for assassin shadow tree.

Take a base critical strike chance of spark at 6% and then just the increased critical strikes support gem at level 20 and 20 quality (a little end game I know) giving 1.9% addition base chance and 88% increased for level 20 and 20% more for 20 quality for 108% total. That alone gives you 7.9% times (1+ 1.08) = 16.432 crit chance with nothing but the skill gem and support gem. Add in any crit chance that applies to spark from your tree and global crit chance on gear and you can ramp it up to the 95% cap pretty quickly.
