Linking Gems - How does it work?

Hi, I'm new to PoE and I'm just wondering something about linking gems.

Say I have a 4 link in a U-shape like so:

X---X
|
X---X

Will the gem in the top-left affect the ones at the bottom too, or only the one in the top-right that it's directly connected to?

If there is a link between them, the gems will affect each other, no matter the position. So it doesn't matter where in a 4 link you put to gems, the result is always the same. The order or arrangement of the gems doesn't matter either, linked it linked.
I think the only time order matters is with trigger gems like Cast With Damage Taken.

Otherwise, support gems affect all applicable skill gems they are linked with.

The support gem has to share a tag with the skill gem to support it.

That's not entirely true. Gem tags are used to determine whether an item modifier applies or not (+Levels to Fire Gems, for example) - that is all.

A decent rule of thumb for Supports is, all modifiers must apply. If a Skill does not have a Duration, the Less Duration Support will not link up, for example. Worth noting: this does not mean the modifier needs to have a practical effect. Added Fire Damage grants +Fire Damage based on Physical Damage - but it links up to any Skill that deals Damage, even if it's zero Physical Damage. After all, the Support doesn't know what other modifiers you have that could grant Physical Damage.

That must be why my DPS sucks. :)
