Savage hit and Energy Shield

I was really disappointed to discover that Savage hits only work on life lost and not energy shield loss

I can understand with the Marauder Berserker being not meant to use energy shield but this is also the case with the Scion's Berserker version

Was this really intentional?

Scion's Occultist is not optimal if you're not an ES build, Scion's Hierophant is not optimal if you're not a mana build, and Scion's Berserker is not optimal if you're not a life build. I don't see anything special here.
