Lags on good computer & internet connection.

Hello all.

For first - I wanna thanks for very good expansion, I do love play on act 4 :).

But I got some problems with comfortable playing.

My pc is:
"
i5 4590
GTX 970
8GB ram

And my internet is:

The problem is when I log in and choice any gateway and log in into game i have random freez... generally when I use (for first time) any spell or any "spell animation" - for example rare box with monsters, spell by monster another player etc. Thats really annoying - and danger for me, because I play on HC league...

Like on this screen:

From 300 fps to 0, moment when I use spell/monster use it.

In other online games like a: diablo 3, HOTS, BF3 I dont have any of this problem - only on PoE... It is anything I can do to fix it??

I use steam version, in opions UI I got "lockstep" mode. What i should do do fix it?? Help me please - I'm scerry to go at Piety on cruel now - because I can die by stupid freeez. :((
we all got same problem and cant do anything... im curious about some streamers shares their 60fps stabilised videos.

Yup, I dont get it either... My PC dont have problem with any of game (even Wincher 3 is on FULL at 60fps+) online/singleplayer but only PoE freez like hell... :/
SSDs REALLY help when you have stutters/freezes when opening lockboxes (or loading any assets).

Most of the lockups you get in these scenarios is because the game needs to load new assets that aren't already loaded, and they are being loaded from the Content.ggpk file on the hard drive. The faster the data read/transfer happens, the lower the affect of the stutter.

SSDs have much faster data access than mechanical hard drives, and if your MB supports SATA3 and you're using the proper cables and everything, that data load is almost non-existent.

So that would be my suggestion. Use a RAMDisk if you have enough memory, or use an SSD otherwise.

I don't think its depends from HDD/SDD, why i got it in PoE with not so good graphics/special effects and in Wintcher or BF when it's coming a lot ofr special effects etc I dont have any lag?

That's not exactly how it all works.

Different games use different design techniques for their engines and other things.

PoE loads a lot of resources "on demand" from the Content.ggpk file which is like a miniature hard drive inside of a file. It has to locate the Content.ggpk file from your ACTUAL hard drive, then index inside of it for the specific file internally that it is looking for. If the Content.ggpk is fragmented at all, it adds more seek time to the locating of the file and reading it. Once it has fully read the file (which can be slow depending on which file and what the file size is) it transfers it to a location in memory where it can access in a "cache" of sorts until it is no longer used.

Other games do different things with resource loading. Some just load everything, others us direct file access rather than archive formats. Others even have optimizations on their archive format to make loading faster (and more predictive loading also helps).

In the case of PoE, it doesn't know which assets or files it needs to load for a strongbox until the server tells it to when you open it. It's not really predictive at all. So the game has to sit and wait for the assets to load before it can proceed. Other games are much more predictive and don't need to usually wait on assets to load as they've already been loaded.
I appreciate your input Drakier, but the problem goes beyond loading assets. I can literally run in circles in my tiny hideout and my character will periodically get stuck for two to four seconds, no matter what I click. When I'm in a map, this will happen while standing still. I click to move, and I don't go anywhere for two seconds. Or I get stuck casting a spell over and over for a few seconds when I only pressed the button once. My machine is more than capable, and I'm running on an SSD. I excepted the .exe in my virus software, as I read that might help, but it hasn't. These lag spikes are happening on all three US servers, and they've been especially persistent today.

Sounds to me like some sort of resource contention.

Have you tried checking Resource Monitor when these spikes occur and seeing what the system resources are doing at the time?

Are these spikes semi-regular? IE: Can you almost predict them based on some time interval?

If so, it's likely some background process or bottleneck tying you up.

PoE is very GPU AND CPU heavy... if something else is fighting PoE for CPU power, then it can cause the symptoms you describe. Also keep in mind that PoE is single-threaded... so you actually might get better performance by allocating a specific core to PoE that isn't the main system core.
