[1.3] Chaos Res Low Life Crit Freezing Pulse [Video Added]

Intro

==============================================

So I've been watching ProjectPT's stream quite a bit recently and all his talk of low life got me itching to try it for myself. In general my belief is that Life is far superior to Energy Shield simply because of health potions.

This character was a CI crit freeze pulser from the last temp league. Yesterday I re-spec'd it and grabbed some fun items I had laying around in the standard stash and much to my surprise I put together and incredibly powerful and tanky build.

Take a look https://youtu.be/t5GaoxzjnMg

Spoiler

Some items may look a little over the top, but everything except the chest has been accumulated during my time in poe.

If I were to try maximizing the build I would immediately look for...

300+ es shield with spell damage, spell crit, mana regen, and an all res roll or a chaos res roll.

150+ es gloves with tri res and mana roll

How is Low Life Status Achieved

==============================================

Spoiler
I am trying to keep as much of my life unreserved as possible to give myself a chaos damage buffer. Here is how I am achieving low life.

Reduced Mana, Blood Magic, and two heralds will get you down to low life. With a level 20 reduced mana and blood magic you are reserving 68 percent of your life (low life requires 65 percent). Because mine are in the vertex which adds one level to the gems I will be reserving 66% when they hit 20.

Another option you have is to use the clarity aura on blood magic and balance out the levels of reduced mana and blood magic with your life pool. Here is a great tool to figure this out https://poe.mikelat.com/#

The downside to this is every time you level or your clarity levels you may need to adjust this.

I will likely use this method once I hit level 85 and get a lvl 20 clarity. This will also allow me to use a curse on hit setup.

Surviving Chaos Damage

==============================================

Spoiler
This was my biggest concern going low life chaos res and as it turns out, it is not an issue at all. I have 68% chaos res in merciless, this combined with 1% life regen from the tree allows me to not care about chaos damage even without a life flask. I can even push through monsters that do chaos damage attacks thanks to the life gain on kill from the Divinarius.

Did you say TANKY?

==============================================

Spoiler
I did, and I can't really explain why or how. Defensively this build is almost the exact same as when I was CI. The big difference is the Lori's Lantern Unique ring and now I am doing almost double the damage I did as CI. So enemies being unlucky seems to greatly reduce the damage I am taking and now that I'm pushing out more damage I suppose I am now hitting my leech cap meaning I'm leeching more than when I was CI as well as freezing more often and for longer.

At level 77 I went into a 74 maze map and intentionally tanked 3 lasers from vaal, it took me to half my energy shield. I've been tanking exiles of all types, I took a fully charged flame blast from magnus in a 73 canyon it took two thirds of my energy shield and the burn prompted me to use vaal discipline, that usually one shots my other characters.

I have video clips of the 2 described instances. I will try to compile a video that shows those and some other sketchy instances.

So far nothing has killed me and I only have 6.5k es (up to 10k with vaal discipline).

The vertex is around 2-4 exalts if you can't afford it, get a broken crown. The stats on it will greatly help you as you need a good amount of dexterity and strength.

The lantern looks cool, gives you more easy chaos res and appears to be a huge boon to damage mitigation.

Gem Links

==============================================

Spoiler
Freezing Pulse -> Greater Multiple Projectiles -> Spell Echo -> Life Leech -> Power Charge on Crit -> Cold Penetration

Supports are listed in order of importance. Now you could get power charges or life leech from a curse on hit setup. This would allow you to run more damage supports and have a much higher tooltip dps. I don't do this because I always want my power charges and I always want to be leeching life. The damage is just fine with this setup. It's even out performing a life based freeze pulser I am playing in the one month flash back league who uses a tabula rasa and has faster casting in place of life leech.

Cast When Damage Taken -> Enduring Cry -> Immortal Call -> Increased Duration

Enjoy it while it lasts

Lightning Warp -> Reduced Duration -> Faster Casting (optional)

Movement skills greatly increase clear speed, use one if you have the slots for it.

Vaal Discipline -> Increased Duration

I felt this was a must for Energy shield builds, it gives you a clutch heal and allows you to tank nasty bosses.

For your auras you have options here is the easier setup.

Reduced Mana -> Blood Magic -> Herald of Thunder -> Herald of Ice

Reduced Mana -> Discipline -> Clarity

When using this setup I also keep an elemental weakness (because I don't have a 6 link for cold penetration) to self cast on bosses. If you have a 6 link, you can self cast any curse you see fit. I would recommend assassins mark for the extra crit chance and crit multiplier.

The more tricky setup you will be using Clarity on blood magic and balancing out the levels of blood magic and reduced mana to achieve low life status. See "How Low Life is Achieved" for more info.

Reduced Mana -> Blood Magic -> Clarity

Reduced Mana -> Discipline -> Herald of Ice

Reduced Mana -> Herald of Thunder -> Curse on Hit -> Elemental Weakness/Warlord's Mark/Assassin's Mark

Using this setup gives you access to an auto curse which is desirable for most players... cause we're lazy.

Find a slot for arctic armor, I currently run a low level one, but the icy trail and little mitigation it gives is well worth the gem slot.

The Tree

==============================================

Spoiler
Level 90 tree

You don't need to be level 90 to do this of course. I started this build with a level 74 witch.

For Bandits I would recommend, Skill Point, Skill Point/Cast Speed, Power Charge

Final Thoughts

==============================================

I am very glad I finally tried low life. I always thought it had a huge barrier to entry and you needed a couple of stacks of exalts to get up and running. I was surprised to find I had most of the gear I needed on hand in standard and I would be much more inclined to try it in temporary leagues or 1 month races.

With the Awakening coming there are a lot of questions as to if or how builds like this will work. I would recommend to anyone who has thought about playing Low Life to jump in and give it a try now in case the build becomes much harder to do in the upcoming expansion.

For me I will be enjoying this build and optimizing it whenever the beta gets stale or while waiting for the next big patch in beta (like now). I'm very excited to see how far I can push the damage of Freezing Pulse and can't wait to get to a spot where I can go mow down Atziri.

Im curious as to why you use Divinarius... its an AoE weapon, wouldnt something like a crit wand be better? since you can get more spell dmg, cold dmg, and crit chance on the wand?

Helping people with their builds, its somewhat a hobby, and a passion of mine, so don't be shy!

I'm using the divinarius because its what I had in the stash. If I were to purchase a weapon for this build, I would still get a dagger, a Kris for the 80% implicit crit.

That said the divinarius is fine for the build. The radius extends the reach of herald of thunder and the life gain on kill is nice when fighting packs of chaos damage attackers. Plus it has the two most important stats, spell damage and spell crit. Whatever else you can get on your weapon is gravy.
Glad you had the confidence to try the build. Being able to push 10k effective health allows you to ignore so much content.
Here is a bit of a gear update. I'm now running a curse on hit with my herald of thunder to apply elemental weakness. I tested assassins mark and using increased critical damage in place of power charge on crit and while I got an impressive tooltip, my clear speed became very inconsistent.

Spoiler

I tried the Catalyst in place of divinarius because with the supreme truth skin and awakening effect it looked way cooler than carrying around a little dagger. Either weapon is fine, but for min maxing you'd still want a rare kris.

I'll also show my flasks as I feel they are pretty important.
